Project description

A 3.5 year PhD studentship (covering stipend and fees) is available for a UK student to work in high speed aerodynamics in which the location of transition to turbulence is one of the major unknowns. This project will use a combination of linear stability theory and direct numerical simulation to develop physics-based approaches to transition prediction. The project will extent current computational tools based on single species perfect gas representation to include effects of thermal non-equilibrium. Navier-Stokes simulations will then be run to cover transition to turbulence under different free-stream conditions. Models will be constructed based on linear theories and modal analysis. The successful candidate will have a strong background in compressible flow and computational modelling.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 7 November 2021 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: For UK students, Tuition Fees and a stipend of £15,609 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
