Project Description

Postgraduate course subject: Machine design

Our research aims to develop new methods for lubricating mechanical components in electric drive belts to improve e-mobility. The demand for lubricants to achieve higher energy efficiency and durability in "green" electric machines is increasing. In order to develop more efficient lubricants and to expand their application, we use new ionic materials. The goal is to understand the basic mechanisms that control lubrication with new types of lubricants based on the ionic materials. The technology can also provide additional functionality such as in-situ friction control.

Lubricated contacts in gears and rolling bearings will be modeled and studied. A range of equipment will also be used to analyze surfaces and lubricating properties. The research is part of a multidisciplinary project that links synthesis, simulations, physical chemistry, tribology and machine design, The project is carried out in close cooperation with industry and is supported by the Foundation for Strategic Research and the Swedish Energy Agency.

Admission Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic qualifications:

  • graduated at the advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits, or
  • acquired in other ways in or outside the country, essentially equivalent knowledge.

Mechanical engineering, physics and material chemistry are examples of suitable backgrounds. Research experience is an advantage.


In order to succeed with your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal oriented and persistent in your work. When selecting applicants, the ability to:

  • independently push their work forward,
  • be able to collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyze and work on complex issues.

Following the eligibility requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal characteristics and personal fitness.

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as doctoral students. The employment may be valid for a maximum of one year and then renewed. An employee doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%) perform certain tasks in, for example. education and administration.
