The Functional Materials group headed by Prof. O. Gutfleisch at the Department of Materials and Earth Science at TU Darmstadt is offering a

PhD Student Position – Design of Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet materials for laser powder bed fusion – 75%

with a fixed-term contract of 3 years (with possible prolongation until the end of December 2023) within the frame of the CRC/TRR 270 Hysteresis Design of Magnetic Materials for Efficient Energy Conversion - HoMMage.


The team of the CRC/TRR 270 comprises 21 professors from different groups of the departments of Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry at TU Darmstadt as well as of the faculties of Physics, Chemistry and Engineering at Universität Duisburg-Essen. The position is hosted by the internationally renowned group Functional Materials, which focusses on the development of resource-efficient functional materials. The group’s topics of interest range from permanent magnets over magnetocaloric materials and ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys to magnetic materials for biomedical application with focus on synthesis, characterization and modeling of the magnetic, thermal and (micro-)structural properties.

Your tasks within the project A10 of the CRC/TRR 270 will be the development and synthesis of R-Fe-B powders suitable for laser powder bed fusion. You will also develop and conduct the additive manufacturing process and determine the microstructural and magnetic properties of the AM-products. Your main goals consist of mastering required phase compositions together with the optimization of micro- and nanostructures formed during the laser powder bed fusion process as well as the formation of a magnetic texture in the AM magnets.

Your profile:

We expect you to integrate into our interdisciplinary team and contribute actively to the overall progress of the CRC/TRR’s objectives in close collaboration with your colleagues of the CRC while, at the same time, pursuing your own thesis highly motivated and self-reliantly. Requirements are an excellent scientific degree (master or comparable) in Materials Science, Physics or Chemistry, possibly with a focus on synthesis and characterization of magnetic materials or experience in additive manufacturing, and very good English competencies (fluent in spoken and written).
