PhD Position in Recovery of Phosphorous from Thermal Inceneration Residues

The ChEMaRTS research team is based at Campus Group T Leuven and deals with the valorization of thermal incineration waste, industrial residues and end-of-life streams. Currently, ChEMaRTS counts three professors and a number of highly competent and motivated PhD students, all active under the unit of Sustainable Materials Processing and Recycling (SeMPeR) of the Department of Materials Engineering (MTM) and under the Department of Chemical Engineering (CIT).

Project

The objective of this PhD research is the development of a sustainable technology to recover phosphorous from thermal incineration residues. Principles of aqueous chemistry and extractive metallurgy will be applied to extract phosphorous and other values from the residue, purify the generated solutions and generate marketable high added value products from them. Flowsheet modeling will be also performed to generate the data for a techno-economic analysis and/or a life-cycle assessment. This research involves an extensive experimental activity (incuding chemical analysis) as well as using computational tools (chemical speciation, process simulation, etc.). 

Expected results:

- Definition of the conditions required to extract and recover the desired values;

- Recovery of the desired materials as high added value products and testing of the same products within specific applications; 

- Flowsheet modeling, TEA and/or LCA;

- Multiple (2-3) scientific publications;

- PhD dissertation.

The person in this position is also expected to carry out educational tasks for about 10-15% of his/her time.

Profile

The successful candidate:

- holds a Master degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or any other comparable discipline, with a solid knowledge in statistical methods;

- has a profound interest in circular economy policies, experimental work and flowsheet simulation;

- has a creative and problem-solving mindset and takes initiative to conduct cutting-edge research;

- is an enthusiastic, enterprising team-player with resourceful ideas. He/she is always on the look-out for improvements and is capable to approach and solve problems in a creative and transparent way.

- can assist in teaching activities through project work, exercise and lab sessions. 

- is fluent in English (both spoken and written).

Any prior experience with experimental work based on hydrometallurgy, separation technologies and/or functional nanomaterials is considered a plus.
