You will work within the Op3Mech research group (


Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of Machine vision for the inspection of offshore wind turbines. In your research you develop machine learning techniques which allow to detect damage (like corrosion) of offshore wind turbines. You coordinate imaging measurement campaigns of wind turbine structures during manufacturing and operation (in collaboration with offshore wind companies). Amongst others you make use of drones to record the images.

  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.

  • You contribute to teaching and research in Faculty of Applied Engineering - Department of Electromechanical Engineering.

  • If relevant you apply for external research funding (scholarships).


Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master degree in Engineering sciences or physics.

  • You can submit outstanding academic results.

  • Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.

  • Foreign candidates are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of Dutch is not required.

  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.

  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

  • You have good communication skills, both written and oral. You speak and write English fluently.

  • You can program (in Matlab, c ++ and/or Python).


We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation;

  • the start date of the scholarship will be between January 1st 2020 and October 1st 2020;

  • a gross monthly grant ranging from € 2.373,36 to € 2.516,73;

  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
