PhD Position in Laser Based Micro-Manufacturing

Catholic University of Leuven Department of Mechanical Engineering

Belgium

The Manufacturing Processes and Systems (MaPS) division of the Department of Mechanical Engineering offers PhD positions in the field of advanced manufacturing engineering, with a focus on laser material processing. The positions are available immediately at Campus Arenberg (Leuven). The MaPS division at KU Leuven has a long history of innovative developments in the areas of hybrid processes, additive manufacturing and micro-manufacturing. You will join our research team specialized in laser based micromachining and laser surface texturing (LST) of metals and ceramics. By collaborating with other research groups within and beyond the university, the team always strives to orient the research towards innovative applications, with many examples related to the fabrication of medical devices, while maintaining the fundamental research aspects linked to material interaction with the processing tools.

Project

You are expected to work on one of the following projects:

  • Surface functionalization using laser surface texturing: Laser surface texturing can alter the surface characteristics (e.g. friction and wear, wettability, biocompatibility or optical response) of materials used in several applications such as aerospace components, biomedical devices, cooling systems, and tools and dies. In this context, the proposed project focuses on the fabrication of surface textures on complex 3D molds for microfluidic applications using ultrashort femtosecond lasers. Detailed experimentation and process modeling (analytical, numerical, machine learning-based) will be performed to study the laser-material interaction and predict the process response.
  • Laser-basedhybrid manufacturing: This project involves developing suitable laser-based secondary processing techniques (texturing, surface finishing, cutting, laser shock peening) for additive manufacturing parts. It aims at studying the effect of hybrid processing on the part characteristics and the underlying process mechanisms.

Profile

We are looking for a PhD student researcher with:

  • a Master's degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent
  • experience in manufacturing processes and/or laser based technologies is an added advantage
  • good communication skills (oral and written) in English, as you will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team which requires frequent interactions with external researchers, knowledge of Dutch is a plus
  • interest for research and ability to pay close attention to details
  • enthusiasm for learning and willingness to take initiatives to acquire new skills and explore innovative ideas

Offer

You will get:

  • the opportunity to be part of a dynamic research group and to conduct research towards a PhD at an internationally renowned research university,
  • an attractive salary comparable to the starting pay of an engineer in Belgium,
  • networking opportunities through participation in conferences, workshops and collaborations with local and international research groups,
  • the opportunity to develop teaching and management skills,
  • a work location in the nice environment of Campus Arenberg in Heverlee, Belgium.
