Job description

The Department of industrial systems engineering and product design, Ghent University, Belgium is looking for a full-time PhD student in the field of Industry 4.0. The Department hosts 50 researchers, focusing on smart cities, data analytics, operational research, transport and mobility, industry 4.0, modelling and simulations, and digital twins. ISyE-UGent is core lab within Flanders Make.

The selected PhD candidate is expected to address research questions that arise in the industry 4.0 context from a scientific and engineering perspective.

The precise research topic will be determined in consultation with the PhD candidate, in line with the research scope of the call and the candidate’s profile.

Research topics include:

  • Simulation, modelling and a digital twin;
  • Big data analytics and advanced information processes on integrated Internet of things (IoT) and other data sources;
  • Operational research and predictive modelling using data- and expert-driven models;
  • Quality and robustness of decision systems;
  • On-demand and flexible processing chains and systems;
  • Industry 4.0, smart factories, smart sensors.

Profile of the candidate

Background and experience:

  • Highly motivated to obtain a PhD and has a passion for scientific research;
  • A master’s degree in Science/Engineering.

Scientific knowledge and skills:

  • You are able to engage practically with applied research in industry 4.0 and data analysis.
  • You have a well-founded background in scientific research and/or engineering.

Personal knowledge and skills:

  • A strong interest in interdisciplinary science, related to the research topic;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with teammates from different backgrounds and with different tasks;
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English are strictly required;
  • Organizational skills, and a responsive, result-oriented attitude;
  • Willingness to travel internationally.
