The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering consists of three divisions: Industrial Engineering, Quality Science and Management, and Civil Engineering and Built Environment. The department has a strong and international research environment and has approximately 80 employees with research and education both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. This position will be located at the division of Industrial Engineering in Uppsala. For more information, see the web of the department at

Project description: Additive manufacturing (AM) for life sciences that is currently introduced in a multitude of fields within the health and medical area carries a great potential to radically contribute to what is often referred to as personalized medicine and treatment. Today AM technologies have the potential to significantly improve diagnostics, personalized medication, personalized implants as well as pre-surgical planning and training. In a mid-range future, technologies for tissue and organ printing will likely bring even more fundamental changes to the medical as well as the healthcare sector in general. However, technological breakthroughs alone are not sufficient to lead to successful implementation and this project will focus on two important aspects that are essential for implementation: (1) business models tailored to AM and (2) implementation barriers, facilitators and strategies.

You will in this project be part of an international research team performing research & development on business models and implementation strategies for varying AM technologies such as nanoprinting, polymers for bioprocess components, new materials for implants, bioprinting, printing technologies for medication and pre-operative AM technologies. Identification of barriers and facilitators and development of implementation strategies to address factors at different levels such as individual, group and organizational level will be part of the research mission. You will have good knowledge in qualitative methods (e.g., interviewing and participant observation) and basic understanding in quantitative methods (e.g., questionnaire).

The project will be carried out within AddLife, which is a VINNOVA Competence Centre that gathers more than 20 partners in academia, industry and the public sector to support competence development in additive manufacturing for the life sciences. The center is funded by academia, industry and VINNOVA in equal parts, and engage experts within academia and industry with a passion for 3D-printing with the ultimate goal of developing new technologies to improve people’s lives.
