PhD position (m/w/d) in hydrogeochemistry/mineralogy/chemical engineering

The Chair of Hydrogeology is offering a PhD position (3 years, TV-L 75%) to assess, quantify and mitigate fouling in geothermal systems and open loop cooling towers.

The Chair of Hydrogeology is member of the Department of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering at TUM. Our vision is "Sustainable Groundwater-Ecosystem Development: Clean Resources For Our Future".

In the framework of ZIM – "Germany’s largest innovation programme for small and medium-sized enterprises", we are developing a sensor network based on physical and virtual sensors to assess, quantify and mitigate fouling in geothermal systems and open loop cooling towers. Fouling, the development of organic and inorganic precipitates on pipes and heat exchangers, is responsible for many technical problems and hampers the technical and economic efficiency of geothermal systems and cooling systems. The project team includes colleagues from the Chair of Non Destructive Testing at TUM, as well as measurement system experts and water technology specialists from industry.

The PhD-project in this interdisciplinary team will parametrize and model the kinetics of processes causing inorganic and microbiologically induced fouling, set up a test system to implement new sensor devices to measure fouling, assess the physical properties of the precipitates, and develop strategies to reduce fouling by non-invasive methods.

Your qualifications:
Master of Science from an internationally acknowledged university in hydrogeology / hydrochemistry / mineralogy / chemical engineering and beyond:
• Profound knowledge in hydrochemistry and hydrogeochemistry
• Knowledge and experience in geochemical models
• Programming skills for data processing and numerical simulations (e.g. Python, Matlab, Comsol Multiphysics, C)
• Team oriented working style
• Willingness to travel nationally and internationally as well as physical fitness
• Good mechanical skills, including basic construction skills (FreeCAD, SolidWorks)
• Strong communication skills, including fluency in written and spoken English
• Enthusiastic and highly motivated to complete a PhD
