PhD Position in Functional Engineering of Crystalline Nanomaterials

Breakthroughs in science and technology have repeatedly been driven by new and innovative materials. Where size, shape and compositional effects on the functional properties of nanomaterials have been widely explored, the influence of the crystal phase received less attention. The ability of a material to adapt multiple lattice structures, i.e. structural polymorphism, allows tuning of the functional properties (chemical, electrical, and optical) for specific applications. 

In this project we are looking for a PhD student to:

1.Synthesis: To gain control over the crystal structure of technologically important materials such as allotropic noble metals and perovskites by tuning experimental parameters such as synthesis method, composition, morphology and temperature.

2.Characterization of crystal structure: A central component of the project is the versatile characterization of the crystal phase. The primary techniques used for this will be based on nonlinear optical measurements such as second harmonic generation (SHG) and multiphoton microscopy and light scattering. Besides this a wide range of state-of-the-art techniques such as XRD, Raman microspectroscopy, SEM, AFM, absorption and emission spectroscopy will be employed to characterize crystal structure and morphology.

3.Characterization of structure-property relationships: Establish how the electro-optic properties (i.e. quantum yield, band gap, charge separation,..) relate to crystal structure. 

Via this synergistic the goal is to guide the fabrication of novel materials, with a potential for applications in solar cells, LEDs or chemical sensing.

The research will be performed primarily at KULAK (Div. of KU Leuven, Kortrijk), but is part of the larger multipartner FuEPoNa project which brings together complementary expertises of several outstanding research groups within KU Leuven, for more information visit:

Profile

If you have a knack for challenging, creative and interdisciplinary research on the interface of materials science, chemistry and physics, which may be at the base of novel future technologies, don’t hesitate to apply. You will end up in a state-of-the-art research environment within an enthusiastic and welcoming team. While independence is required on your part, you will be guided by experienced researchers in your endeavors.
 
-You have a master in chemistry, physics, materials science or related domains.
-Experience with synthesis of perovskites, noble metal particles or other crystalline materials is considered a plus. A course on these materials and their electro-optic properties will be part of the PhD track.
-Experience in optics or nonlinear optics is considered a plus, but not necessary since an introductory course at KU Leuven will be part of the PhD track. A willingness to familiarize oneself with these techniques is required.
-Experience with other techniques such as XRD, spectroscopy, SEM, Raman, AFM,.. is considered a plus.

Funding is available for the entirety of the PhD, initially a 1 year contract will be provided which will be extended in case of a good evaluation.
