PhD Position in Biomedical Engineering

You are excited about how ultrasonic transducers can improve dental prophylaxis? In a joint project of the Institute for Human Centered Engineering (Bern University of Applied Sciences), the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine (University of Bern) and the Industrial partner E.M.S. Electro Medical Systems S.A., we investigate a new approach for high-effective piezoelectric miniscalers. We are offering a fully funded PhD position for at least three years, starting Fall 2019.


Your Tasks

The candidate will conduct analytical and experimental research for the control of piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers that includes but not limits to:
• Derive a computationally efficient model for parametric analysis
• Explore sophisticated feedback control approaches and model-based optimization algorithms
• Setup an experimental test bench including a dedicated control system, power amplifier and laser doppler vibrometers
• Develop and characterize ultrasonic transducer prototypes
• Perform extensive in vitro tests on biofilm models
Your Profile
The outstanding candidate has:
• A master's degree in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering or microtechnology with specialisation in mechatronic systems
• A solid background in feedback control and electronic engineering
• Knowledge in the modelling and simulation of electromechanical systems and in programming (MATLAB/Simulink or Phyton)
• Practical experiences with piezoelectric transducers
• Strong writing and communication skills in English, while French or German is a plus
• Enthusiasm to conduct applied research
