PhD Fellow in Natural Language Processing

University of Copenhagen Department of Computer Science

Denmark

PhD fellow in Natural Language Processing

The Machine Learning Section at the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Natural Language Processing commencing 01.09.2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is for 3 years.

Description of the scientific environment

The Machine Learning Section provides a strong, international and diverse environment for research within Theoretical and Applied Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing and Understanding, Information Retrieval, and Medical Image Analysis. It is housed within the main Science Campus, which is centrally located in Copenhagen. For details, see https://di.ku.dk/english/research/machine-learning/. The successful candidate will join the CoAStaL Natural Language Processing research group (https://coastalcph.github.io).

Project description

Building interpretable and robust natural language understanding systems will greatly benefit from linguistic frameworks that explicitly represent various aspects of meaning. While there is increasing awareness about their importance, it is not clear whether and how these representations complement each other. Combining linguistic understanding with information theory, this project will comprehensively characterize which differences are meaningful, and which are superficial, in the sense that they can be normalized out, or exist only for formal reasons. It will greatly impact, and be informed by, multitask learning and interoperability between meaning representation frameworks, resulting in a better inductive bias for learning NLP models for many languages.
