About the Position

The University of Stavanger has a vacancy as a PhD candidate in offshore technology - offshore wind, at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Machine, Building and Materials Technology. The project is entitled "Combined Wind and Wave Energy Concept".

This is an educational position that will primarily give promising researchers the opportunity for professional development. The position has research training up to the doctoral degree as a goal.

The PhD candidate is appointed for a period of three years with pure research training.

This PhD program will focus on the development of floating wind turbines integrated with wave energy converters in shallow waters. Design and optimization of support structures and mooring systems in shallow waters will be investigated. Dynamic analysis and power supply assessment will be carried out during this doctoral program. Scaled model tests can also be performed to validate numerical models.

The position is externally funded by funds from the Equinor-UiS Academy Program.


Eligibility Requirements

We seek you who have a strong academic background with a five-year master's degree (3 + 2) within marine / offshore engineering, mechanical engineering or engineering engineering or equivalent education that provides the basis for conducting a research education, preferably of a recent date.

If your grade on the Master's thesis and weighted average grade on the Master's program both correspond to B or better, you are among those we are looking for. If you complete your education in the spring of 2009, you are also welcome to apply.

Applicants with an education from an institution with a different grade scale than AF are required to attach a confirmed conversion scale that shows how the grades can be compared with the Norwegian AF scale.

You must also have:

  • solid knowledge within marine hydrodynamics and construction techniques
  • good skills in mathematical modeling and advanced programming
  • creativity and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary project
  • ability and motivation to perform high quality research
  • ability to work both independently and with other researchers in a structured way

Furthermore, emphasis is placed on:

  • has solid knowledge and experience with the use of SIMA, Orcaflex and OpenFOAM.
  • has solid knowledge in applied mathematics
  • has solid knowledge in "Computational Fluid Dynamics" and "Finite Element Method"
  • has solid programming skills in numerical modeling
  • is motivated and has the potential for research within the field
  • can work independently and in a community, be innovative and creative
  • is structured and has great working capacity
  • has good English proficiency, both written and oral.
