Part-time Lecturer Position in Thermodynamics

Nanyang Technological University

Singapore

The School of Materials Science and Engineering invites applications for a part-time lecturer to teach a first-year B.Eng course entitled 'Thermodynamics of Materials' in AY2019/20 (August 2019 – June 2020).

To teach classical thermodynamics, beginning at an introductory level and progressing to an intermediate level. To teach the fundamental Laws of thermodynamics and its influence on the behaviour of materials at the micro and macro scale. To apply the concept of equilibrium and free energy in designing equilibrium phase diagrams. Electrochemistry is also taught.

Course content would include:

This course introduces thermodynamics at an introductory to intermediate level.

1. Concept of work, heat, enthalpy and entropy. Laws of thermodynamics

2. Concept of free energy and equilibrium. Solving thermodynamic problems with Maxwell’s equations.

3. Application of theories to single-component solutions, multi-component solutions and electrochemistry.

Learning outcome:

The final result is to integrate theory and practice of the course concepts to applications in order to prepare the student for a career in materials engineering. The knowledge acquired in this course will also prepare the student for advanced study of thermodynamics at graduate level.

Criteria

Bachelor’s degree with minimum 2 years of working/teaching experience in this field. A suitable Masters or PhD in any engineering field will be required. It will be an advantage if the applicant had prior undergraduate teaching experience in thermodynamics. Due to the part time nature of this job, Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents are preferred as candidates will not be able to get a work pass. Foreigners on dependent pass may apply.

To apply

Interested applicants should e-mail their application to fareez.rajaie@ntu.edu.sg by 29 March 2019. Application package should include a detailed CV listing their teaching and industry experience, as well as, student feedback on teaching from previous institutions, where possible.
