Managing Director

University of Zurich

Department of Molecular Life Sciences

Managing Director of The BioVisionCenter
100 %

The need for computer vision in molecular life science research is rapidly growing due to an explosion in the use of spatially resolved measurement technologies across a wide range of scales, in combination with an increased demand for large-scale multivariate quantification of such datasets. The BioVisionCenter (BVC) is a recently launched new research center situated at the Irchel campus of the University of Zurich (UZH), co-founded by the UZH and the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel (FMI). Its mission is to become a worldwide leading research center for the promotion of comprehensive, scientific bioimage data exploration. Besides developing and implementing new technologies, the BVC will provide a computational platform as a service to its users that enables scalable bioimage analysis across multiple modalities and scales, from cryo-EM to whole organ imaging. As part of the launching phase, we are now seeking to fill two key positions.

Your responsibilities

Besides managing the day-to-day activities, the Managing Director will be expected to develop a medium- and long-term vision, to take the lead in acquiring additional funding, to expand the number of both academic and private partners, to aid with the embedding of the center within the national and international research community, to develop a sustainable cost model for the services platform. She/he will report to the BVC steering committee and the UZH leadership and work in a team together with the Scientific Director (tenured professor, in preparation), the Head Research and Development (hiring in progress), the Head Services (in preparation), administrative personnel, and multiple systems administrators and software engineers and developers.

Your profile

For the position 'Managing Director', we are seeking candidates with the following profile:

  • A research background with a PhD degree
  • Managerial experience in leading a team, research group, research center, or core facility in an industrial or academic setting
  • Strong affinity to scientific imaging and/or computational image analysis, preferably within the life sciences.
  • An outgoing, interactive character, exceptionally strong people skills, and an entrepreneurial mindset who thrives in developing a new enterprise.
  • Fluent in both written and spoken English
  • A Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree
  • Fluent in both written and spoken German

What we offer

The position will initially be for three years, during which the BVC is in a start-up phase and for which the necessary funding has already been secured. During this phase, the center will need to prove its long-term relevance and secure sustainable funding, after which the position is planned to become a tenured appointment at the UZH.

The BVC offers a highly attractive working environment embedded within an exceptionally strong, socially relevant research community in both the biomedical and computer sciences at the University and ETH Zurich and finds diversity and inclusion as essential core values. Zurich is a young, dynamic, and international city offering a living standard that ranks consistently amongst the highest in the world.
