Position Summary

The Indiana University Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering in Indianapolis invites applications for one full-time lecturer-track faculty position in the Department of Library and Information Science. The appointment will begin August 1, 2026. This 10-month appointment is annually renewable, based upon satisfactory performance. Summer teaching opportunities are also available.

A committed educator is sought to join our department on the Indianapolis campus. We are interested in candidates with one or more of the following areas of expertise:

  • Emerging Technologies in Libraries and Archives

  • Educational Technology

  • Technology in Support of Information Organization and Systems

Candidates must have experience effectively teaching in an online environment and five or more years of professional (industry) experience in one or more of the areas listed above. A deep understanding of career opportunities in the information professions and a passion for graduate student mentoring for academic and professional success are essential.

Ideal candidates will also shape their teaching to leverage the unique strengths of Luddy Indianapolis, including its interdisciplinary and collaborative environment and commitment to service and community engagement. We especially welcome candidates who bring direct experience or novel approaches to incorporating generative AI (and related tools) to enhance student learning.


Responsibilities

Full-time lecturer-track faculty commit to a balanced workload of teaching and service, which includes:

  • Teaching graduate courses in the LIS department (typically four course sections per semester and 3–5 different courses per academic year)

  • Supervising independent studies

  • Mentoring graduate students

  • Contributing to course and curriculum development

  • Participating in departmental, school, campus, and professional service (e.g., committees, initiatives, task forces)

This position entails a standard teaching load of four courses per semester, with a distribution of effort consisting of 80% teaching and 20% service responsibilities. This is an in-person faculty appointment requiring full-time on-campus presence.


About the Department of Library and Information Science

Founded in 2000, the Indianapolis location of the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science was established to provide high-quality library education for students requiring distance learning options. The department is ALA-accredited, offering a diverse array of academic and career specializations.

The LIS department is particularly strong in:

  • Application of technology to the information professions

  • Public libraries and children/youth services

  • Archives and digital curation

Tenure-track and lecturer faculty work collaboratively to provide engaged education and foster the development of the library and information professions. Securing external funding for student support and faculty research is an important priority for the Department and the School.


About the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering – Indianapolis

The Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing was the first completely new school in the United States devoted exclusively to informatics and its sub-disciplines. In 2013, it merged with the School of Library and Information Science.

The Luddy School now offers:

  • 6 Ph.D. programs (Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computer Science, Health and Biomedical Informatics, and Information Science)

  • 8 Master’s programs (Applied Data Science, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Health Informatics, Human–Computer Interaction, Library and Information Science, and Software Engineering)

Basic Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree

  • 5+ years of professional experience related to one or more areas of expertise listed above

  • Knowledge of pedagogical theory and state-of-the-art practice

  • Documented effective teaching at the graduate level

  • Ability to adapt and diversify pedagogy for changing methodologies, technologies, and student needs

  • Commitment to departmental and school service, especially in curriculum development and instruction

  • Willingness to lead pedagogical and assessment initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous instructional experience in higher education
