Position description

The Master of Design program at the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation at the University of California, Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach fall and spring semester courses, as well as summer courses and special topics workshops, should an opening arise.

The Master of Design (MDes) program is an on-campus, three-semester, professional graduate degree in design of emerging technologies that integrates human-centered design with an informed understanding of technology to prepare students to excel in creative practices today and to anticipate the emergent needs and environments of tomorrow. Jointly offered by the Colleges of Engineering and Environmental Design, the program's interdisciplinary curriculum connects technical rigor, design theory, and social practice and prepares students for a broad range of creative and technical roles for designing innovative products, services, and environments.

Housed at the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, the MDes provides a dynamic, hands-on curriculum that uniquely equips students with the mindsets, tool sets, and skill sets needed to explore new technologies, flourish on teams, and contribute to projects that make thoughtful impact.

Lecturers will supervise student design projects, give lectures, prepare assignments and project topics & deliverables, hold regular office hours, prepare exams or hold reviews, give design advice, and submit final grades.

We are also seeking Teacher Special Programs (TSP) instructors, should an opening arise. The TSP's principal responsibilities can range from teaching a short course, providing a lecturer with industry expertise, participating in design critiques during a course, teaching at Institute bootcamps, or contributing to major curriculum development.

The department is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching.
