Job description

Job summary

There are exciting and substantial research and educational opportunities related to Infrastructure Materials. Society needs materials with enhanced technical performance, longer life and reduced greenhouse gas footprint. These need to be more easily recycled and contribute to lower initial and whole-life, cost infrastructure. We also need to find ways to use established materials more efficiently and to transfer this knowledge into practice.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is now seeking a Lecturer in Civil Engineering Materials in order to conduct game-changing research and teaching related to Infrastructure Materials.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of the Centre for Infrastructure Materials and the Materials Section and this will allow you to take a take a lead in this research area.

You will be encouraged to use the new suite of laboratories, which have been created and equipped with £5.4M from EPSRC.

You will also teach on the new MSc course in Advanced Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure. The first cohort of students on the course started in October 2019.

These are full time open ended posts.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be expected to plan, resource and direct an original and high quality research programme in one or more aspects of Civil Engineering Materials with a strong scientific element to the work.

You will have the capability to carry out research projects alone (supervising research students/assistants) and will also be expected to develop collaborative projects, particularly with other members of the Department, to tackle broader engineering challenges.

You will also be expected to develop at least one new MSc module on the new MSc programme in Advanced Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure, and contribute to the MEng in Civil Engineering run by the Department.

Essential requirements

The successful candidates will need to demonstrate that they meet the criteria listed below:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in a subject relevant to construction materials
  • A track record of high quality research activity and publishing technical papers in leading international peer-reviewed journals.
  • The appropriate technical skills to perform cutting edge and rigorous research in an aspect of construction materials.
  • The vision and imagination to develop a series of good ideas for funded research projects.
  • The ability to interact positively with other academics, and to communicate well, especially in teaching.
  • The ability to coordinate, organise, lead and inspire the work of others, and to seek external funding, from Research Councils, Government, EU and Industry.
