Junior/Assistant Specialist – Department of Mechanical Engineering – University of California, Berkeley

Professor Hayden Taylor is seeking a Junior/Assistant Specialist for his research group on the project “Breathing Facades for Low-cost Cooling and Dehumidification in Tropical Climates”. For more information about his research, please visit: http://design-nano.berkeley.edu

Appointment Length:
This is a full time, one-year position with the possibility of being extended subject to performance and budgetary approval. Anticipated start date is February 2021.

This position will work directly with Professor Hayden Taylor’s research group, on the project “Breathing Facades for Low-cost Cooling and Dehumidification in Tropical Climates.” The group consists of students, faculty, and researchers performing research in manufacturing processes technologies and their applications. Successful candidates will also have the opportunity to interact with the broad spectrum of researchers in Berkeley's Mechanical Engineering Department and in the Berkeley Education Alliance for Research in Singapore.

The project concerns the conception, analysis and prototyping of designs for “breathing façades” to enable low-cost cooling and dehumidification in buildings located in tropical climates. The application areas of specific interest are those where conventional air conditioning has proven too expensive to use; for example, in some public schools or municipal facilities. Also of interest are residential applications where conventional systems may offer inadequate ventilation. The project will involve contributing to computational modeling of candidate heat transfer geometries, structures, and systems, planning manufacturing/prototyping processes, fabricating prototypes, setting up instrumentation, carrying out experiments and analyzing results. The position will provide the opportunity to mentor undergraduate student researchers.

Day to day duties will include:

Assisting with writing Matlab code and running Matlab simulations
Assisting with the production of graphs and writing reports to describe simulation results
Participating in group meetings about the project
Assisting in the design pf heat exchanger geometries and producing CAD drawings of them
Assisting with the planning for manufacturing processes for heat exchanger designs
Liaising with campus makerspaces and suppliers to arrange fabrication of components for heat exchangers
Assembling prototype heat exchangers
Setting up testing experiments
Assisting with writing up reports of testing results
Assisting in preparation of archival publications

The position is based in Berkeley, California.

Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or equivalent international degree or enrolled in a Bachelor’s (or equivalent international degree) program granting program at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications (by start date):
• Bachelors or equivalent international degree.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Masters or equivalent international degree
• Desirable skills and experience include one or more of: the analysis and design of air conditioning systems, modeling of heat transfer in heat exchangers, design and manufacturing of polymeric heat exchangers, and modeling of phase change in heat transfer systems.

Salary and title will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley salary scales. The salary for this position is $44,500–$57,800 depending on qualifications and experience.

This position is covered by the UC-UAW collective bargaining agreement for Academic Researchers.
