The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track (Assistant) or tenured (Associate) faculty position to grow expertise in the area of Transportation Engineering. The candidate should have research expertise in at least one of the following areas:

Smart Infrastructure refers to the prospects of having transportation systems that will be intelligent, adaptive, and connected. The integration of sensors and communications devices with our civil and environmental infrastructure provides boundless opportunities to enhance the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of these assets. Applicants with research expertise in smart traffic signals, smart and connected cities, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, transportation asset data collection, and management practices are encouraged to apply.

Shared Mobility refers to the shared use of a vehicle, bicycle, or other transportation mode. Emerging trends including ‘mobility-on-demand’ and ‘mobility-as-a-service’ along with CAV offer unprecedent opportunities that will transform the ‘way-we-move’. These technological advances will change our transportation systems and introduce substantial safety, mobility, sustainability, and equity challenges. Applicants with research expertise on how these advances will impact connected vehicles, autonomous vehicles, automated data collection, remote sensing, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications are encouraged to apply.

Big Data Analytics refers to the enormous amounts of anonymized data that are generated through the movement of people on an ongoing basis. Such data present the opportunity to apply advanced processing methods to model and analyze travel behavior, safety, and mobility. Applicants with expertise on how the use of such big data will lead to research innovations in the areas of activity-based travel behavior, travel demand modeling, transportation planning, and econometric modeling are encouraged to apply.

Resilient Transport refers to the ability of a transportation system to move people around in the face of one or more major obstacles to normal function. Our society is currently facing several growing challenges where innovative and interdisciplinary solutions are needed in both urban and rural environments to contribute to infrastructure efficiency and resilience. Applicants with research expertise on how such solutions can address issues such as aging infrastructure, climate change impacts, population growth and urbanization, technological change and adoption, and energy consumption are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in Engineering or related fields. They would be expected to be a licensed Professional Engineer with eligibility for member with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) and must obtain this membership within two years from date of hire. The Department believes that innovation, professionalism, and excellence in engineering stems from leaders who value diversity, equity, and inclusion of all perspectives and people. We seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment to these values in their research, teaching, and service work, both past and future. The successful candidate is expected to develop a rigorous externally funded research program, supervise students, and teach existing undergraduate and graduate courses within the department curriculum, as well as develop new courses within transportation engineering and civil infrastructure. The successful candidate must also demonstrate a record of publication in high-quality, reputable, peer-reviewed journals.

The University of Alberta, founded in 1908, is one of Canada's foremost research-intensive universities with an operating budget of over one billion dollars annually; the external research funding was over 500 million dollars. The University has over 38,000 students including over 7,000 graduate students. The Faculty of Engineering has over 4,400 undergraduate and 1,500 graduate students.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (including School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering) is committed to securing a position among the leading schools in North America. With a present complement of more than 60 faculty members, research in the Department is vigorous and covers all major areas of Civil, Environmental, Mining, and Petroleum Engineering. Our graduate program attracts outstanding students from the best schools worldwide and presently has an enrollment of over 500 students, including approximately 200 PhD students. The undergraduate programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering enroll over 900 students.
