TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN
The Environmental Design Program invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing September 1st, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. We are seeking applicants with a passion for design education who can work across disciplines and to apply innovative and creative approaches to their work. This position offers applicants the opportunity to work collaboratively within a dedicated and forward-thinking team of design educators to provide a catalyst for outstanding undergraduate design education. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The Faculty of Architecture, University of Manitoba is located on Treaty One Territory, the original lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. The Faculty of Architecture is dedicated to critically and creatively engaging students in the pressing issues of the day through studies in the design of human and natural environments. The Faculty offers an undergraduate program in Environmental Design, four graduate departments with professional design degrees in Architecture, City Planning, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture, and a Ph.D. program in Design and Planning.
The Bachelor of Environmental Design degree is a four-year program of studies consisting of two years of Foundation Studies [ED1 and ED2] followed by two years of Intermediate Studies [ED3 and ED4]. Foundation Studies challenge the students to understand the holistic nature of Environmental Design from an early design education stage, building the groundwork in design, research, and critical thinking. Intermediate Studies prepare the students in discipline-based design theories and practices through specialized study in Architecture, Interior Environments, or Landscape+Urbanism. The successful candidate will contribute to the enhancement and future of the Environmental Design Program.
TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN POSITION, TEACHING, RESEARCH, AND SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will be in the Environmental Design Foundation Program. The ideal candidate will understand Environmental Design as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry and have a background in teaching and research or teaching and practice with a focus on emerging practices in technology and design. We support an approach to technology education that integrates science with design in its tectonic, phenomenological, and poetic aspects. A record of teaching and design studio instruction at the undergraduate level is necessary.
The annual teaching assignment over two terms includes one co-taught design studio per term, and one mandatory lecture course focusing on Materials, Structures, and Assemblies. The lecture courses must support design as a way of thinking, making, and contributing to the world. The candidate must be capable of teaching beginning design studios and have a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles of environmental design and the science and practice of building technology.
We are looking for a candidate who is familiar with applied statics, construction materials, construction material properties, and construction system assemblies for building exteriors, interior constructions, and applications involving landscapes, including impacts on resource depletion and socially and environmentally sustainable building practices. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to inspire and engage students, and to facilitate the integration of building technology principles in Environmental Design education. The candidate will have the ability to conduct rigorous research, scholarly work, engage in creative activities, and contribute to service within the University and the local community. The candidate will have an awareness of the big questions related to Environmental Design in our times, including but not limited to resource depletion, urban overgrowth, climate change, massive migrations, vernacular culture, reconciliation and social justice, food scarcity, etc.
