The Department of Electronics-ICT in the Faculty of Applied Engineering, in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, is looking for a full)time (100%)

Doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Applied Engineering – Electronics, with a focus on biomedical signal processing, machine learning and applied artificial intelligence for signal analysis.

Position

  • You work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis. Your work will be focussed on biomedical signal processing using advanced signal estimators, machine learning and deep neural networks. The primary focus will be a project on automatic lung sound analysis for early detection of pulmonary diseases such as pneumonia in humans and animal models.
  • You will publish articles in journals and international conferences, where you will also present your research results
  • You carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the faculty of applied engineering.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in electronics engineering, signal processing or artificial intelligence, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You have a strong interest in biomedical signal processing
  • You are interested in working in interdisciplinary teams consisting of engineers, physicians, biomedical researchers and physiotherapists
  • You can apply and validate theoretical signal processing concepts in simulation as well in real-world prototypes

 What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1 November 2020 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for contract research staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Groenenborger in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
