The Otto Schott Institute of Materials Research seeks to fill the position of a

Doctoral Researcher/PhD student (m/f/d) in Borate Bioactive Glasses

commencing on or before 01 September 2021.

Bioactive glasses react with aqueous solutions, and they are used clinically to restore body tissue. This project investigates how the properties of bioactive borate glasses depend on their composition and structure and can be adjusted via these. As our new doctoral researcher you will prepare and characterise borate glasses and investigate their structure, physical properties (thermal behaviour, sintering etc.) as well as ion release and dissolution during in vitro immersion experiments.

Your responsibilities:

  • Planning and performing research on borate glasses for use as biomaterial
  • Work closely with other group members on various analytical techniques
  • Publication and dissemination of research results
  • Work on your own scientific qualification project, e.g. doctorate

Your profile

  • Master's degree in materials science, chemistry or related subjects
  • Strong interest in Materials Science and Biomaterials
  • Basic knowledge in the areas of glasses, glass-ceramics or related materials would be desirable
  • Experience in solid-state NMR, Raman spectroscopy or computer tomography is a plus
  • We expect excellent English communication skills (both written and spoken)

This is a part-time position with 50% of the working hours of a full-time employee (20 hours per week), limited to three years.
