Doctoral student in soft robotics for whole-body interactions

School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Project description

Robots will care for, wash, and handle people in hospitals. Car seats will touch a driver’s back, bottom and thighs as they drive to draw their attention to road conditions. These are some of the ways in which technology is predicted to touch us in the future. The goal of this PhD is to demonstrate what this touch should feel like.
This is an interdisciplinary PhD drawing on knowledge from Interaction Design and Mechatronics. The student will participate in the ERC-funded project “Intimate Touch: Developing Interaction Design Knowledge and Materials where Technology Touches the Body”. The applicant will work with hybrid and soft robotics to contribute to the design, development and evaluation of fully-fledged applications in the real world. Examples of potential application areas are diverse, spanning healthcare, through to the automobile industry. As part of the challenge the applicant will need to develop control systems that ensure responsive and dignified touch between humans and technology.

Third-cycle subject: Human Computer Interaction

Supervision: Associate Professor Madeline Balaam (Main) and Assistant Professor Georgios Andrikopoulos( second )
