The Materials and Manufacturing Office at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is seeking a Department Head for the Embedded Hardware - Software Systems and Applications located within the Systems and Operations Division. This position is expected to set the vision for and lead the execution of research, development, prototyping, and transition of systems and tools that increase the quality and speed of design and manufacturing and promote the cost effective sustainment of Department of Defense (DoD) systems. The Embedded Hardware - Software Systems and Applications Department’s primary focus is on platform health management and system automation hardware and software development. The department personnel contain a spectrum of skill sets. Responsibilities include: Identify opportunities for cross campus collaborations for Systems and Operations Automation Division and Embedded Hardware - Software Systems and Applications Department researchers; define and develop major research programs; cultivate new sponsors; lead and execute large research initiatives comprised of multi-disciplinary teams; and engage and support the Penn State research community. Faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience. This position will be filled as either Research Faculty or a Research and Development Engineer. Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Acoustics, or related a discipline plus fifteen years of related experience. Required knowledge and experience includes:Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Acoustics plus fifteen years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An active Secret clearance is highly preferred. Required experience includes: Embedded system development involving field programmable gate array, digital signal processors, and microprocessors; platform technology integration; real?time system hardware design and analysis; and advanced user interface development and wireless communications. The successful candidate will have: A demonstrated track record of interdisciplinary research and development leading to successful technology transition; the ability to network and collaborate with Federal Government employees and contractors who support DoD; and excellent presentation, communication both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills. Domestic travel is required for this position. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
