We are six Schools, six research centres, home to three prestigious ARC Laureates, the stunning Esme Timbery theatre and Creative Practice Lab, UNSW Galleries, iCinema, the Design Futures Lab, and multiple other maker spaces, Institutes, Labs and Studios across our Kensington and Paddington campuses.

As a new faculty, it is our priority to develop an Indigenous Strategy to affect long-term change in the educational outcomes of Indigenous students and the intellectual and cultural integrity of Indigenous teaching and research across the faculty.

The Industrial Design Program in the School of Built Environment is looking for an outstanding teaching focussed academic to join our team. The Program offers a Bachelor and a Honours degree in Industrial Design. This degree is recognised for excellent Industrial Design education and research in Australia and beyond. Our graduates are working with international industry leading technology, health and product development companies.

Our design academics are commitment to applied and experimental research and innovative, student-focussed teaching, including collaborating with our extensive industry partners and our Design Futures Laboratory. This offers a richly rewarding platform for educating the next generation of Industrial Design thinkers and practitioners not only in Australia but internationally.

We are looking for an early career academic with solid industry and demonstrated teaching experience to help deliver our highly awarded degree program and to contribute to our teaching excellence and a highly rewarding student learning experience. Responding to our changing globally connected world you are competent in both online and face to face delivery of a range of engaging teaching content.

In terms of Industrial Design specialisations, we are interested to hear from applicants with expertise in the field of human-product interaction and the social and cultural implications of design. We assume a working knowledge of practical manufacturing and material issues.

Ideally you will have experience working as a practising designer or in a relevant related field. Your primary teaching, engagement and leadership responsibilities will sit in the Industrial Design Discipline. Where appropriate, you will be encouraged to take advantage of interdisciplinary opportunities across the School, Faculty and University. 

Accountabilities

Specific accountabilities for this role include.

• Demonstrate a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning
• Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in line with UNSW policy and with guidance of more senior academics
• Design and develop learning activities and resources, and assessment and feedback using a range of appropriate approaches and learning environments with the support of more senior academics
• Contribute to the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning led by more senior academics
• Supervision of Honours students in completion of their Capstone research theses and projects
• Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students
• Manage course administration, including academic quality assurance
• Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge and minimum professional accreditation requirements (where relevant)
• Make a positive contribution to School meetings and seminars and be a member of School/Faculty committees as required
• Cooperate and liaise with the Design FuturesLab workshop staff and to participate in relevant training and activities
• Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health & safety of yourself or others
