Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation at the University of Maryland is pleased to announce a search for one tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. The individual selected for this position will provide innovative instruction and mentoring, as well as impactful research, scholarship, creative, and/or professional work in support of the pre-professional and accredited professional degree programs in architecture.

The Architecture Program has a tradition of excellence in integrated building design. We seek a colleague who will bring leadership in the area of building performance, offering a vision of a design process driven by the intellectual traditions of science and technology. The successful candidate will teach architectural technology courses at a variety of levels in the curriculum and make a bridge with design studios. We are particularly interested in candidates with the ability to integrate building technologies into design studios and other professional degree coursework. We seek candidates who can teach with an emphasis on methods and materials of construction in the context of climate change, and we hope the candidate will help the school define what that might entail. Some suggested areas of focus could be (but are not limited to): Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), embodied carbon calculations for materials and buildings, active and passive sustainable energy systems, dynamic building envelopes, bio-based material/structure innovations, and/or non-traditional carbon-negative materials.

The candidate should demonstrate accomplishments in building system design, building technology development, and/or construction technology development. Evidence of achievement shall be a portfolio of built work, theoretical work, teaching, and/or research, funded research, publications, and patents. Our university and multi-disciplinary school encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and research that goes beyond traditional disciplinary frameworks.

The Architecture Program is the largest of the four academic disciplines housed in the school. The program features an enrollment of more than 500 undergraduates in the pre-professional degree program and more than 120 graduate students in the NAAB-accredited professional degree program.

The Architecture Program has a national reputation for design excellence in building craft, urban design, and sustainability as evidenced by the award-winning Integrated Design studio and Advanced Technology course sequence; numerous honors in the arena of urban design including two ULIHines Competition wins and six times in the final four in ten years; WaterShed, the first-place winner at the 2011 United States Department of Energy Solar Decathlon along with LeafHouse (second place in 2007) and reACT (second place in 2017) making us the international leader in this competition; in six years we’ve placed first twice and were runner up twice in the HUD Affordable Housing competition; and many other citations. Since the foundation of the school over fifty years ago, design excellence grounded in technical competence has occupied a central place within the curriculum and intellectual life of the Program.
