Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS) has brought data science to the forefront of academic research and training at the University of California, Berkeley. In July 2019, BIDS became part of the university’s new academic Division of Computing, Data Science and Society, which provides data science education classes and degrees serving thousands of undergraduate and graduate students a year. BIDS is the leading research unit in the Division, from which it provides broad outreach to departments and schools across the university through its transdisciplinary research and training programs.

BIDS is a leading contributor to research software development and to improving research software sustainability and research reproducibility. We are seeking an Assistant Research Engineer to add to our culture of collaboration and to the strong working relationships which motivate us. We aim to make lasting contributions to open, reproducible research globally to help create the next generation of breakthroughs in data-driven discovery.

The Assistant Research Engineer will support the research and educational mission to build infrastructure to improve scientific package management, citation tracking, and metrics. The engineer will join an active open source research group with a mission to promote development and use of high-quality research software in the scientific community. The position is an opportunity to build highly impactful infrastructure that will improve sustainability of research software and support reproducible research.

Appointment length:

This is a six month, 100% time appointment with the possibility of extension being subject to performance and budgetary approval.


• Develop a map of the research package landscape and build models to measure scientific impact.
• Develop models to analyze software dependency networks to identify ecosystem importance
and risk
• Develop and complete build systems for a new scientific software package ,manager
• Create services that automatically build and host documentation for software packages
• Collaborate with data scientists to identify and analyze metrics to evaluate research software.

Basic Qualifications (at the time of application):

PhD or equivalent International Degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD in Statistics (or equivalent) with postdoctoral experience
• 10 or more years developing R packages
• Working knowledge of C/C++/Rust/JavaScript
• Deep knowledge in one or more of the following specific areas: statistical computing, build systems, package managers, CI/CD, Image processing, text analysis, cryptography, spatial data, networking technology
• Superior oral and written communication skills in English
• Interpersonal skills, positive attitude and teamwork
• High comfort level with standard software and online collaboration tools
• Programming skills in R, C++
• Familiarity with devops skills.

Salary: To be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
