Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Sustainable Materials Technology
The Department of Materials (www.mat.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position.
The successful candidate is expected to be part of a strong collaborative network between all engineering departments and research groups working in materials science and engineering of ETH Zurich and other institutions of the ETH Domain. She/he will have an outstanding research record in materials science and engineering with a strong focus on the design, synthesis, processing, and applications of sustainable materials for a circular economy. Candidates working in industry are also encouraged to apply.
Sustainable materials may be engineered by enhancing fundamental properties through the combination of constituents from one materials class or by integrating diverse materials classes (polymers, metals, functional ceramics, biological materials) across different length scales, from the atomic or molecular level to the macroscopic architecture. Sustainability principles can be implemented in materials by using renewable resources, optimizing the efficiency of material utilization, minimizing energy-intensive processes, and/or enabling recyclability or biodegradability. Fields of particular interest include adaptive materials and structures, integrated electrochemical systems for energy conversion and storage, sustainable high-performance materials, living materials, and sustainable hybrid materials to develop novel electronic and optical devices. A focus on technological aspects of material development and a desire to embrace translational research toward addressing societal challenges in, but not limited to, environmental protection, efficient use of resources, and energy will be a strong asset.
The candidate must be an effective and enthusiastic teacher who will develop and teach courses in the Materials Science curriculum at the BSc and MSc levels. Generally, at ETH Zurich undergraduate-level courses are taught in German or English and graduate-level courses are taught in English.
Assistant professorships have been established to promote the careers of younger scientists. ETH Zurich implements a tenure track system equivalent to that of other top international universities.
ETH Zurich is an equal opportunity and family-friendly employer, values diversity, and is responsive to the needs of dual-career couples.
