Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Information Systems Science, Cyber Security (tenure track)

The Faculty of Information Technology invites applications for a fix-term position of Assistant Professor (3-5 years) or Associate Professor (5 years) in Information Systems Science, Cyber Security, tenure track starting on 8/2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.  

 

University of Jyväskylä is a research-oriented university. The Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Jyväskylä is the first and largest in its field in Finland. Information systems science has been taught at the University of Jyväskylä since 1967.

 

The IT Faculty’s mission is to take on the challenges in research and education brought on by the developing information technology and digitalization. In research, education and stakeholder collaboration, the Faculty combines comprehensively technology and information to the viewpoints of organizations, business and people. The IT Faculty is situated at beautiful lakeside Mattilanniemi campus. Faculty employs 180 people and, currently, there are 2400 undergraduate students and 150 postgraduate students. Teaching is arranged both in Finnish and in English.   

 

Information Systems faculty members have published their research in leading Information Systems journals, such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Journal of Management Information Systems, and others. Faculty members hold editorial positions in reputable IS journals. Information Systems of the faculty has very strong connections to industry. Data collection opportunities are outstanding. We have junior faculty sparring program, where world class visiting professors visit the faculty and provide mentoring for junior faculty members.

At the University of Jyväskylä the research of cyber security emphasizes empirical research (qualitative and/or quantitative), of which the applicant is also expected to have experience and research merits. The research group is internationally established in research of information security management and information systems security. The cyber security research at the Faculty of Information Technology is interdisciplinary and the research group also publishes at HCI and criminology journals.

 

Assistant or associate professor is expected to strengthen the research of cyber security in the field of information security management and information system science.  The applicant selected to the position is expected to do high level research according to his/her level of the tenure track position. He/she is expected to publish in the most prestigious forums in the field of information systems science (like AIS Senior Scholars` Basket) or other fields close to information systems (especially Human Computer Interaction, software engineering, organization and management research).

 

In addition to high-level research, the assistant or associate professor is expected to acquire for external research funding, actively cooperate with other researchers at the faculty of information technology, especially within the field of cyber security, and participate in teaching and supervision of the theses (especially at master and doctoral level). At the associate level, the ability to participate in leading the master program of cyber security is considered as an advantage. 

 

Applicants are asked to tell in the application, which level (assistant or associate) of tenure track system he/she is applying for.

 

The applicants’ merits are evaluated in relation to the length of their post doctoral research careers

 

In the evaluation of research merits publishing on the top-level publications of information systems science (like MIS Quartely and ISR) is prioritized. Also the most distinguished publications in other relevant fields (like HCI, organization and management research, software engineering), as well as other JUFO 2 and JUFO 3 publications of Finnish Publication Forum levels (see https://www.tsv.fi/julkaisufoorumi/haku.php?lang=en) are considered as an advantage.

 

Candidates for Assistant Professor position must demonstrate at least a potential to publish at the top-level publications, at the later phases more emphasis is given on achievements in publishing. Candidates for Associate Professor position are expected to have publications on the top-level publications.

 

Ability to acquire for competed external funding is expected at the level of assistant professor. Associate level applicant is expected to have evidence of the ability to acquire remarkable external funding or at least very strong potential to acquire it. In addition the ability to lead the externally funded projects so that they result in doctoral theses and top-level publications is considered as an advantage on all levels of the tenure track system.

 

International work experience and work experience gained outside the university where the PhD was earned are considered as an advantage. 

 

Get familiar with the general requirements of the position.

 

A position of Assistant Professor is for a fixed term of 3 to 5 years and a position of Associate Professor is for a fixed term of 5 years (according to the Tenure track at the University of Jyväskylä). At the conclusion of each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for the next step. The evaluation procedure shall begin before the end of the fixed-term contract.

 

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees.

5. A short (1–2 pages) description of the applicant’s pedagogical training and teaching merits

6. A short (1–2 pages) description of the applicant’s international activities and his/her experience in the field of societal interaction

7. A short (1–2 pages) Description of how the applicant intends to develop research, teaching and societal interaction in the Faculty of Information Technology in the field of Cyber Security.
