The New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development’s Music and Audio Research Laboratory (MARL) and Tandon School of Engineering Program in Integrated Digital Media (IDM) invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor to begin in September 2020. This is a joint position between the two schools, with the academic home in the NYU Steinhardt Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions and the research home in MARL. We are committed to substantially increasing the proportion of our faculty from historically underrepresented groups as we strive to create the most intellectually diverse, inclusive, and equitable institution that we can, and especially encourage candidates from historically underrepresented groups to apply.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: We seek applicants that, through their scholarly activities, can contribute to methods and foundational knowledge in user experience/human-computer interaction (HCI) and design, with a strong focus on music and sound interactions for performance, learning, and entertainment.  Areas of interest include but are not limited to virtual, mixed, augmented, and extended reality for music and sound; gestural and haptic sound control; interactive music AI systems; human-robot interaction for sound and music; music and sound visualization; data sonification and auditory displays; human-in-the-loop music and sound computing; intelligent sound and music production; collaborative performance; and interfaces for musical expression for people with special needs. Strong candidates in other areas at the intersection of music, sound, and HCI may also be considered. These areas bridge existing research strengths in the two programs.  This position is the third of three joint lines between MARL in Steinhardt and core academic units for science and technology research across NYU.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Conduct an active program of research and obtain extramural funding for ongoing and new projects; contribute to the teaching mission of both the Steinhardt Department of Music and the Performing Arts Professions and the Tandon Department of Technology, Culture, and Society by teaching and advising undergraduate and graduate students, developing interdisciplinary courses at the intersection of music technology, interaction design, and HCI; and leading seminars, workshops, and other public programming for students/faculty/community members. The successful candidate will bridge and complement the existing research strengths of MARL and IDM. In addition, the candidate will participate in faculty meetings and serve on department, school and/or university committees.

QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree and an active agenda of research, funding, and publication, as well as a demonstrated commitment to excellence in scholarship and teaching are required.
