Recruitment/Posting Title Assistant Professor tenure-track faculty position in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a focus on Fair and Responsible Data Science
Department Engn - Elec & Computer Engn
Salary Commensurate With Experience
Posting Summary
The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department in the School of Engineering (SOE) at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, invites applications for a Data Science tenure track appointment as part of a larger interdisciplinary Fair and Responsible Data Science (FRDS) cluster hire at Rutgers supported by the Rutgers Presidential Diversity Hiring Initiative. Information about the FRDS initiative may be found at: https://academicaffairs.rutgers.edu/strategic-diversity-cluster-hires. Other Rutgers units hiring in FRDS include the School of Arts and Sciences (Computer Science and Statistics) and the School of Communication and Information (SC&I) (Library and Information Science). The candidate would join a cohort of researchers that were hired in the FRDS cluster hiring initiative in 2023. The candidate will find a welcoming and supportive community engaged in advancing artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and data science (DS) research through cross-disciplinary collaboration.

ECE is home to world-class research programs in wireless networking, information theory, signal processing, machine learning, high-performance computing, computer vision, socially cognizant robotics, cyber-physical systems, and nano/bioelectronics. Faculty honors include membership in the National Academies, 13 IEEE Fellows (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), 1 AAAS Fellow (American Association for the Advancement of Science), 1 NAI Fellow (National Academy of Inventors), 1 PFF (Presidential Faculty Fellow), 19 NSF Career Awards (National Science Foundation), 3 DARPA Faculty Fellows (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), 1 ONR YIP (Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program), 1 ARO YIP (Army Research Office). Rutgers ECE currently leads an interdisciplinary NSF National Research Traineeship (NRT) in Socially Cognizant Robotics (https://robotics.rutgers.edu/) and is part of an NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Smart Streetscapes (https://cs3-erc.org/). Excellent facilities are available for collaborative research opportunities with local industry through the School’s nationally recognized centers such as the Wireless Information Network Laboratory (WINLAB), the Micro-nanofabrication and Characterization Facility, and the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT). Collaboration opportunities exist with clinicians at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Ideal candidates would bring core data science ideas to engineering research and design. Ideal candidates bring a track record (publications, of world-class data science research in one of three key focus areas: 1) Human-centered AI including the fields of robotics, computer vision, and language processing, especially integrating computational social science and interoperability. 2) Bioelectrical engineering in smart health and medicine using sensing, signal processing, and modeling in a data-driven paradigm; 3) Precision agriculture and remote sensing to develop systems and frameworks for the next generation of environmental applications. An overarching theme of interest within and beyond these focus areas is cybersecurity. Expertise in the domain of security and privacy is highly desirable. Candidates who demonstrate excellence in data science areas beyond the stated topics are also strongly encouraged to apply.

Candidates should speak to their record of engagement, accomplishment, and potential for academic, professional, and/or institutional work undertaken to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in a separate written statement. Through this initiative, we will strongly emphasize hiring faculty who can help advance diversity, equity, and inclusion at Rutgers, especially in enhancing DEI in STEM. The rubric for assessing DEI statements comprises the following questions:
1. What does diversity mean to you, and why is this important?
2. Do you understand the university’s diversity goals?
3. What have been some of your experiences either being part of a non-majority group, or interacting with diverse populations?
4. How has your thinking about diversity actively influenced your teaching, research, and/or scholarship?
5. In thinking about the different roles you have played, and will play, as part of your university service, what role has/will diversity issues play?
6. What role do you believe that advising and mentoring play in working with diverse populations? Does your engagement with diversity help students prepare for careers in a global society?
