Description

As part of UC Davis’ commitment to hire leading research faculty dedicated to the success of historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities and address the needs of our increasingly diverse state and student population, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the College of Engineering at the University of California, Davis, announce an Assistant Professor faculty position in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. Applications are encouraged from candidates with a strong background in any current or emerging area that will fit within our department’s disciplinary focus in Biotechnical Engineering.

This is an academic year (9-month), tenure track position with teaching, research, and service responsibilities and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach/engagement of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (https://caes.ucdavis.edu/research/aes).

Responsibilities:

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering is seeking applicants who will apply modern biotechnology and develop novel bioengineering approaches to address global challenges such as climate change, food supply, environmental protection, and human and animal health and nutrition. The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded program in agricultural, food or industrial biotechnology, applying leading-edge tools and techniques of molecular biology, and synthetic biology such as genetic engineering, protein engineering, directed evolution, gene editing and next generation sequencing to conduct both fundamental and applied research. Possible research areas include, but are not limited to, manipulation of plant, animal, microbial or cell-free systems in the development of novel biocatalysts, biosensors, biochemicals, or biomaterials. The appointee will be responsible for teaching new undergraduate and graduate courses in biotechnical engineering and technology in the Biological Systems Engineering (EBS) major and potentially in a new major proposed in the area of agricultural and environmental technology. Other specific teaching assignments will depend on the academic background of the appointee, and would typically include courses among EBS 1 (Foundations of Biological Systems Engineering), EBS 125 (Heat Transfer in Biological Systems), EBS 127 (Mass Transfer and Kinetics in Biological Systems), EBS 130 (Modeling of Dynamic Processes in Biological Systems), EBS 161 (Kinetics and Bioreactor Design), EBS 170 (Biological Systems Engineering Design), EBS 265 (Design and Analysis of Engineering Experiments) and EBS 270 (Modeling and Analysis of Biological Systems). Undergraduate and graduate student mentoring will be expected. Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental, university and professional service are expected. This position is expected to work with Cooperative Extension specialists and advisors, partners in allied industries or other appropriate public and private stakeholders. We are particularly seeking faculty who have demonstrably shown evidence of a strong commitment towards expanding opportunities for women and underrepresented groups to increase the diversity of the campus community. Qualifications:

Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Engineering related to biological and agricultural engineering. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses in the Biological Systems Engineering program, and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in biotechnical engineering.
