Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) Nanoengineering

The Department of NanoEngineering, which combines materials and chemical engineering applied to nanotechnologies in the Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD, invites applications for a tenure‐track Assistant Professor position. The NanoEngineering Department is committed to building an excellent, diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body.

In addition to research, teaching, and general professional and public service, service contributions that promote diversity and equal opportunity are required and given recognition in the evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications. Examples include, but are not limited to, developing strategies for the educational or professional advancement of students in underrepresented groups; efforts to advance equitable access and diversity in education; and activities such as recruitment, retention, and mentoring or advising of underrepresented students or new faculty.

Candidates must have advanced to candidacy or earned their Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering or related fields to support the Chemical Engineering Program within the department.

New faculty will be expected to build and maintain a strong independent research program in the area of chemical engineering and advanced materials working at the nanoscale. The research areas of primary interest to the department are: advanced nanomaterials and biomaterials, colloids, assemblies and soft matter, nanocatalysts, biocatalysts, nanomanufacturing, nano/microfluidics, surface science, polymer engineering, membranes and separations, etc., with potential applications to energy, healthcare, robotics or sensing. Of particular interest are research programs at the convergence of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, and nanosystem engineering.

The career development of the successful candidate, based on the research interest, may have the opportunity to participate in various school‐wide and university‐wide initiatives and centers, including the Institute of Engineering in Medicine, Data Science Institute, Contextual Robotics Institute, Sustainable Power and Energy Center, Center for Wearable Sensors, Center for Nano-Immunoengineering, Center for Energy Research, Materials Research Center, etc.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Chemical Engineering. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching of Chemical Engineering undergraduate laboratory courses and other core classes, improvement of curriculum, helping coordination of ABET accreditation activities, development and assessment of new educational initiatives, and serving as the faculty advisor to student organizations.
