We have a vacancy for an assistant professor working in the field of civil engineering, data and ICT, who is specialised in experimental fluid & sediment dynamics. The successful candidate is well informed on state-of-the-art instruments for observing  fluid and sediment dynamics, as well as on available methods to process the data that comes available in large experimental programmes. In particular, we welcome candidates with a vision on how to advance sensoring and/or incorporate recent developments in data analytics in experimental fluid and sediment dynamics.
We invite both fluvial and coastal processes specialists to apply, where we expect the successful candidate to have an interest in, and develop a network in either rivers or in both fields. Given the current composition of the group, having a fluvial processes background already is a plus. Networking skills are of importance because rather than owning our own experimental facilities, our strategy is to collaborate with external parties to perform experiments in facilities most suited for the specific purpose of our studies. In addition, the assistant professor is capable, and willing to, keep close contacts with consultants, knowledge institutes and water authorities (both national and international) to be able to connect scientific developments and practical application.
Within the civil engineering department, the successful candidate is expected to look for collaboration with colleagues in (mostly field) data-acquisition and data processing in the fields of river and coastal engineering, but also to have a broader look towards the fields of transport and construction. In addition, we expect collaboration with the modelling specialists in the marine and fluvial domain.

Teaching: The new assistant professor will take his/her part in the teaching tasks of our group. This could include for instance BSc-course on Measurements in Fluid Dynamics, and (parts of) the MSc-courses in River Dynamics or Data and ICT in civil engineering. Also, this assistant professor will supervise BSc- and MSc-final projects. The total teaching load will be about 50%. If the candidate is not yet formally qualified for teaching at universities, we offer a program to obtain this qualification within 2 years (University Teaching Qualification, UTQ).
 
Research: We look for an independent researcher who is able to identify the academic questions in practical applications related to ICT, data, fluid & sediment dynamics and, vice versa, to translate academic research results into engineering practice. He/she is expected to publish research results in high quality, international, peer-reviewed journals. In addition, he/she is expected to attract external funding (national science foundation, EU, government and industry) for junior researchers  (PDEng, PhD and PD positions), of whom he/she will become the daily supervisor.

Your profile
  • PhD in Experimental Fluid & Sediment Dynamics, or closely related discipline.
  • Experience in setting up and organizing experimental research
  • Experience in data processing of large data sets
  • State-of-the art overview of data-acquisition methods and data-analysis techniques
  • Strong publication record
  • Track record in attracting external research funding
  • Good teaching skills, willingness to take the UTQ
  • Good coaching skills (BSc, MSc and PhD students)
  • Team player
  • Good communication skills (in English and preferably also in Dutch, or willingness to learn Dutch).

The Faculty of Engineering Technology (ET)
