Positions summary

The Laboratory for Multiscale Mechanics (LM2) ( in the Department of Mechanical Engineering ( at Polytechnique Montreal seeks outstandingcandidates for multiple PhD positions and one postdoctoratein the interdisciplinary field of advanced manufacturing of high performance polymer composites. The successful candidates will join a vibrant and collaborative environment within the LM2 research group, co-directed by Prof. Daniel Therriault, Prof. Martin Levesque and Prof. Frederick Gosselin. The candidates will be involved in a 5-year large-collaborative project between a diversified academic research team (i.e., LM2 and LAVA research groups) at Polytechnique Montreal and the industrial partner, Safran S.A, France. The project covers both experiments and numerical modeling for the design, manufacturing and characterization of fiber-reinforced polymer composites using advanced additive manufacturing and also popular resin transfer molding (RTM) processes for aerospace applications.


Major responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to carry out the tasks of their positions with a dynamic and creative approach. In particular, they will be expected to:

-          Carry out their research projects under the supervision of the professors,

-          Participate in meetings (i.e., individual with the supervisors, LM2 group meeting, teleconference and in-person meetings with the industrial partner) and other activities related to the well-being of the lab,

-          Prepare technical reports write scientific papers, etc.


Targeted level of studies

4 PhD students and 2 PDFs will be recruited for the expected starting date of May or Sep. 2018, as summarized below.



Area of expertise / Essential qualifications


Interfacial behavior of filaments in 3D printed fiber-reinforced polymer composites

Strong background in modeling and hands-on attitude (Experiments and modeling), knowledge on polymer composites is an asset.


Conformal direct deposition of epoxy-based materials via advanced additive manufacturing

Hands-on attitude, materials science background, basic knowledge on polymers and polymer composites, familiar with polymer characterization methods (e.g., tensile testing, rheology, microscopy observations, etc.)


Numerical modeling for hydrostatic pressure predictionof 3D reinforced composite parts manufactured by resin transfer molding (RTM)

Strong background in programmingand modeling (finite elements models), knowledge on polymer composites is an asset.


Experimental investigationof 3D reinforced composite parts manufactured by resin transfer molding (RTM)

Hands-on attitude, familiar with the design concepts and design software (CAD), familiar with polymer characterization methods (e.g., tensile testing, microscopy observations, etc)


Prediction of the filaments material’s coordinate axes evolution and rotation in composites manufactured by additive manufacturing

Strong knowledge in programming to develop a python script, hands-on attitude, High knowledge on polymer composites and their characterization (mechanical, microscopy)


Development and characterization of new high performance composite filaments for FDM 3D printing of complex structures

Strong knowledge in polymer and polymer composite processing, hands-on attitude, High knowledge on polymer composites characterization (mechanical, microscopy)


Financial support for recruited students

The annual salaries for PhD students and the postdoctoral fellows will be $21,000 and $60,000, respectively.

About LM2

The research at LM2 focuses on metals, polymers, polymer composites, nanocomposites and microsystems. It covers manufacturing, service performance, fluid-structure interactions and mechanical instabilities. Highly qualified personnel is trained in conducting high-risk, high-performance fundamental research as well as industrial research with numerous SMEs, as well as with local and international OEMs in the fields of aerospace, microsystems and energy. Our research uses theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches, and often their combination. The LM2 lab hosts many equipment and facilities related to design, processing, manufacturing and characterization of nano, micro, and macro-systems including, but not limited to, several commercial 3D printers, dispensing robots, mixing equipment (e.g., micro-extruder, 3-roll mill mixer), optical microscopes, and several tensile machines. The LM2 currently consists of approximately 40 permanent members (professors, research associates, postdoctoral fellows, PhD and Masters students, and technicians, as well asmany international interns from all over the world (China, Australia, Ireland, France).
