Senior lecturer in Structural Engineering

Chalmers University of Technology

Senior lecturer in Structural Engineering

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering has around 290 employees working on every aspect of the built environment in the community – houses to live in, roads to travel on, and water to drink – from planning and design to construction and maintenance. The theoretical knowledge base comprises engineering science, as well as social sciences, the humanities and design-based, artistic research. The combination of all these perspectives enables great interdisciplinary advancement in the field and a broader discussion of various aspects of sustainability. Together, we provide a comprehensive environment for civil engineering and architecture, well equipped to tackle the common challenges of building a sustainable future.

Information about the division

The Senior Lecturer is intended to strengthen the division of Structural Engineering primarily within the basic education, but also in research and in cooperation with the industry. The division has about 10 faculty members and currently 9 PhD students and two post-docs working with research and education about bridges, buildings and other load-carrying structures in the built environment. The teaching and research comprises capacity, stability, function and durability of structures as well as the engineering process with development and operation of structures and structural systems.

Within the field of Structural Engineering, we provide basic courses and supervise thesis work in the 3 and 5 years programmes in Civil Engineering, as well as the programme Architecture and Engineering. We are also one of two divisions mainly responsibility for the international master's programme Structural Engineering and Building Technology, one of the most popular master's programmes at Chalmers. Here we provide courses in timber, steel and concrete structures as well as courses that treats the structural design process. We also supervise about 50 students doing their master's thesis yearly.

Our research is based on a strategic combination of theoretical analysis and experiments for understanding of the mechanical behaviour of load-carrying structures. The goal is improved design and assessment methods and safer and more effective structures and design processes to meet the demands for a sustainable future. To maintain a good cooperation with the industry and the society in the building sector, we are running the Structural Engineering Centre together with over 20 companies. The division consists of two research groups: Concrete Structures, and Lightweight Structures. The announced position is primarily intended to strengthen the research group Lightweight Structures, and the position is also important for the general parts of Structural Engineering, like structural design and the design and construction process.
