Position Description

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Micro/Nano Systems Fabrication and Integration with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2018.


Position Description

Applicants must have a doctoral degree, or will have earned a doctoral degree by the anticipated start date, in Electrical Engineering or in a closely related discipline.


Applicants must demonstrate potential for excellence in Micro/Nano systems research within the University of Calgary strategic research areas. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experimental research and hands-on fabrication experience in at least one of the following:

  • Biomedical microsystems engineering,

  • Electrical bio-systems,

  • Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), Bio-MEMS, and/or Radio Frequency-MEMS

  • Micro-sensors and micro-sensor fabrication.


Relevant professional experience with industry will be considered an asset.


The successful candidate will be expected to establish and lead an externally funded research program and supervise graduate students, develop an independent experimental research program in his/her area of expertise, leverage the capabilities of the Schulich School of Engineering clean-room facility ( for his/her research, and, with time, assume responsibility for directing the facility by representing and promoting it nationally and internationally and interfacing with industrial partners.


Applicants must also demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching. The successful applicant will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He or she will be expected to develop a graduate level course in his/her area of expertise to complement the offerings of the Department. In addition to the research and teaching responsibilities, the successful individual will participate in professional and university service.


Applicants must be registered (or be eligible for registration) as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) within two years of initial appointment.

About the Department

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers BSc degrees in Electrical and Software Engineering. The Department also offers MEng, MSc, and PhD degrees in Electrical, Computer and Software Engineering with specializations in software engineering, energy and environment, environmental engineering, and energy and environmental systems. The Department is home to 600 undergraduate students, approximately 200 graduate students, and 42 faculty members including 6 research chairs. The Department is a research leader in a variety of areas including power- and energy-control systems, radio systems, telecommunications and wireless technologies, micro/nano technology systems, bioelectricity, biomedical instrumentations and image processing, and software engineering. The successful applicant is expected to work collaboratively with existing faculty members having mutual research interests on finding practical solutions to real-world problems.
