PhD student position in Energy-efficient optical fiber communication systems

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 240 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at Bachelor's, Master's and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society.

Information about the project

This project is cross-disciplinary and involves different Chalmers departments; beside the Department of Computer Science and Engineering also the Photonics Lab at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience and the Communication Systems Group at the Department of Electrical Engineering are involved. The project will benefit from the prolific research environment in the Fiber-Optic Communication Research Centre (FORCE) of Chalmers.

Optical communication links and networks are essential not only for the Internet backbone, but also for shorter interconnects used in data centers and high-performance computing systems. As a consequence of a wider deployment of optical communication technologies in combination with the insatiable demand for communication capacity, the aspect of increasing energy consumption in optical communication systems has become a major challenge for our growing information society.

In the framework of projects funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation and Vinnova, this project seeks to address the general challenge of developing energy-efficient digital systems for the next generation of fiber-optic communication systems. While focus is on implementation and demonstration of digital signal processing and forward error correction, the project also addresses power and energy modeling as well as system design tradeoffs.

Major responsibilities

The person filling this position will participate in research as outlined above and will be spending time at all three departments which will be essential to help cross-fertilize our work. Therefore, working in teams is an essential aspect as is “thinking outside the box”. The appointment offers an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry. Included in your work is also to some extent taking part in the supervision and teaching of students.

Position summary

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.


Applicant should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or similar, with a strong background in digital electronics design with emphasis on ASICs. Experience with ASIC design software tools, in particular design suites from Cadence, Synopsys and Mentor Graphics, as well as MATLAB is required. Excellent team-working skills, presentation skills, and fluency in English are required. As merits will be considered knowledge in signal processing and fiber-optic communication systems; teaching experience; and publications.
